Contractors License Requirements
Before you can apply for California contractors license, you must meet the following experience requirements:
4 years of experience in the trade.
Be at least 18 years old.
Social Security number or ITIN
The State will accept self-employed experience.
You must have a combined total of 4 years full-time journeyman-level experience in the last 10 years. Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.
Even though you can apply for a contractors license when you are 18 years old, it is recommended that you be at least 23 years old due to the experience requirement.
Contractors License Fees
Here is the list of fees that you will incur when applying for your initial contractors license.
Application Fee - $450
Initial License Fee
$200 for Sole Ownerships
$350 for Corporations/Partners/JV/LLC
Live Scan (Fingerprinting) - about $75
Contractor's Bond - Approximately $233/year*
"The $233/year bond rate does not apply to C-39 (Roofing) or C-53 (Swimming Pool) contractors bonds.
Who needs a contractor license in California?
If you are an independent contractor or “self-employed” performing any type of construction work totaling $500 more, including labor and materials, you must have a valid contractor license.
Requirements according to the CSLB (Contractors State License Board):
4 Years of Full- Time Experience in your trade within the last 10 years.
Have an active ITIN or Social Security Number.
Must be at least 18 years old.
CSLB now has 10 of its licensing exams available in Spanish. Staff identified the trade exams where a Spanish translator is most often requested and have translated the following exams into Spanish: Law and Business, B - General Building, C-8 Concrete, C-9 Drywall, C-15 Flooring and Floor Covering, C-27 Landscaping, C-33 Painting and Decorating, C-36 Plumbing, C-39 Roofing, and C-54 Ceramic and Mosaic Tile. All of CSLB’s study guides for the 48 exams have been translated into Spanish and are available on CSLB’s website.
